Which Gravotech solution for steel engraving?

A steel laser engraving machine is done without any contact with the part and does not require any pre-treatment/post-treatment.
The result is a permanent, resistant, high-contrast marking with high definition finish and is done without damaging the steel. From the rawest to the most polished steel, steel laser engraving machines are flexible and offer a lot of possibilities: marking; engraving; etching; annealing or cleaning.

Integrable:

  • Fiber Laser: quick steel marking and deep engraving on production lines.
  • MOPA Laser: adjustable pulses deliver black marking on demanding steel surfaces.

Stations:

  • WeLase™: compact steel engraver for precise marking and personalisation of small steel parts.
  • LW2: medium automated station for repeatable steel marking from single parts to small batches.
  • LW3: large workstation for marking oversized steel parts at multiple positions.

Marking steel parts with dot peen is performed using a tungsten carbide stylus which comes into contact with the surface and deforms the material through a succession of impacts that form the final marking.
The result is a legible, resistant, permanent, non-contrasting marking that can be done before and after treatment (painting, galvanising, etc.). Ideal for industrial applications, it is a fast and reliable steel marking machine suited for identification & traceability of an part.

Integrable:

  • XF510p: high-speed pneumatic dot peen for continuous steel-part identification.
  • XF510m: precise electromagnetic dot peen for reliably readable Data Matrix codes on steel.
  • XF530p/m: deep dot peen marking for durable identification on heavy steel parts.

Station:

  • Impact: standalone dot peen steel engraver for permanent steel identification without a PC.

Rotary engraving on steel is performed with a rotating cutting tool by removing material layer by layer using a high-speed spindle.
The result is deeply engraved texts, numbers, or logos that are long lasting. Rotary is a good steel engraver for a neat deep marking and can do light milling or drilling.

Bench-top:

  • M20 X: compact rotary engraver for precise marking of small steel items.
  • IS400: stable industrial engraver for deep, repeatable marking on steel parts and plates.
  • ISx000: large-format CNC platform configurable for engraving and machining steel plates.

Scribing technology on steel uses a carbide tip or diamond tip to apply permanent marking directly on the hardest steels (up to 62 HRC). Unlike dot peen, the tip doesn’t vibrate but slides along the surface, resulting in a continuous, highly legible, and precise line. This process has the advantage of being very quiet on steel parts with high resonance like tubes, sheets and so on.

Integrable:

  • XF510r: near-silent scribing for clear marking on resonant steel tubes and sheets.
  • SV530: deep scribing up to 0.3 mm for durable marking on heavy steel components.

How do the various technologies engrave steel?

Steel etching and laser engraving

Steel laser engraving machines have the undeniable advantage of having several engraving methods, all creating different reactions and results.

  • Annealing: a de-focused laser beam is applied to the surface, bringing carbon to the surface and slowly heating and oxidising internal molecules. A dark colour is visible after cooling.
  • Laser etching: the beam melts only a few micrometres of the surface of the material and does not fully penetrate the material.
  • Deep engraving: when marked components require reworking, additional painting, or the material is rough, laser engravings need to be applied deeper into the steel to ensure the marking remains visible and durable.
  • Laser ablation: partial removal of a thin layer from the surface of the material, which allows for contrasting marking on a dark surface. Surface treatment and cleaning: removal of paint, coating, dust, and rust to clean surfaces.

Dot peen and scribing marking machines

Dot peen marking and scribing are perfect for the identification of all steel parts. They offer permanent and legible marking regardless of the characteristics of the steel, the surface state, dusty or not, oily at the end of machining, cold or hot, thin or thick.

The dot peen and scribing processes have several advantages:

  • Does not create breaking points in the material, whatever the thickness of the marked part
  • No material removal
  • No oxidation or corrosion
  • Marks steel up to 62 HRC

Dot peen steel marking machines allow very deep markings to be made. Those marks resist surface treatments that will be applied after marking (painting, galvanisation, etc.) and therefore maintain their legibility.

CNC rotary steel engraving machines

Rotary engraving is very effective on steel as the spindle can drill into hard surfaces. This method has the advantage of adding a bevel (according to the spindle’s shape) that enhances the engraving’s visual appeal.

As for milling applications on steel:

  • Requires high-frequency spindles with strong torque
  • Requires continuous lubrication during the milling process
  • Generates metal chips that must be evacuated (often managed by the lubrication system)

Rotary technology can reach practically any depth, as you can make several passes to remove multiple layers of material.

FAQ: The 5 questions most frequently asked of our experts

🔽 What machine for steel engraving or marking should I choose?

The above table should guide you a bit. But as always, the best machine is the one that answers your specifications and needs. The best course of action is to contact our team of experts, and they will provide the solution most adapted to your application. Nevertheless, a good start would be an LW2 laser station, IS400 rotary engraver, or Impact dot peen machine.

🔽 How can I keep Data Matrix codes readable on machined, forged, or shot-blasted steel?

Start with the real production surface, not a polished sample. Roughness changes contrast and cell geometry, so code size, module size, marking depth and lighting must be validated together. Laser often performs well on textured steel, while dot peen or rotary engraving can be very consistent on machined surfaces. Add camera verification when read-rate is critical.

🔽 How much laser power do I need for steel marking?

Do not size a steel-marking laser on wattage alone. Required depth, cycle time, code size, alloy, surface finish and heat sensitivity all matter. Higher power helps with deep engraving and throughput, while variable pulse control can improve contrast and thermal control. Run application trials on real production parts before specifying 30 W, 60 W or higher.

🔽 Should I choose pneumatic or electromagnetic dot peen steel marking machine?

Pneumatic dot peen is usually preferred when cycle time is the priority because its impact frequency is much higher, but it requires compressed air. Electromagnetic systems need only electrical power and offer precise control of each impact, which is useful for consistent identification and Data Matrix marking. Gravotech XF510p and XF510m are practical examples.

🔽 How can I find the correct engraving parameters for my steel part or object?

The right parameters depend on the steel grade, surface finish, required depth, contrast, geometry, and production speed. Gravotech can help you identify and fine-tune the best engraving parameters through application testing on your actual parts. This process helps optimise power, speed, frequency, passes, and tooling for reliable, repeatable results.
